Job Summary:

This function covers incumbents who are responsible for identifying, measuring, controlling, and monitoring the firm’s operational risk for all areas, providing an early warning system of the firm's key risk indicators. The incumbent will be concerned with limiting exposure due to risks such as those resulting from human error, unsupervised trading, transaction processing failure, external events, threats to information systems, data integrity and fraudulent activities. Incumbent at this level is fully knowledgeable on the day-to-day activities of a product or process however will require input on more complex issues. This individual may have oversight of a small team of junior staff to ensure all daily responsibilities are completed. Individual at this level has some understanding of the firm's different businesses and the related economics.

Reporting to the Director, Operational Risk Governance, this position is responsible for maintaining and supervising processes that support the Company's enterprise wide Operational Risk Management Framework. This position has daily contact with BURMs and BURCOs across all business lines, entities, and regions in the Americas as well as a broad cross-section of business line staff. Works directly with Legal Department on Attorney Client Privileged operational loss events.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the recording and validation of all operational loss data in the Americas. This data is reported to senior management, the Board of Directors, and regulators and is a critical input into mandatory regulatory stress tests. Includes enforcing controls around data change.

  • Provide direct supervision over operational risk management processes to ensure accurate and timely completion of requirements, including analysis, trending, and reporting, as well as implement and monitor controls

  • Provide risk analysis and key metrics for required management reporting, at all levels of the Company, including MUFG.

  • Provide operational risk management training and consultation to first line business units as needed

  • Facilitate business line/subject matter expert discussions, consultations, presentations or training on risk trends, policy/procedure requirements, risk levels, internal controls, regulatory expectations, industry insight, emerging risk or risk assessment.

  • Stay abreast of operational risk industry trends and best practices, to ensure policies and processes are adequately meeting regulatory requirements, as well as providing business partner satisfaction and efficiencies.

  • Leadership or participation on operational risk management related projects, as needed.

  • Gather and provide requested documentation for internal audits and regulatory exams, as well as participate in all appropriate discussions.

  • Review quarterly FR Y-14Q mandatory data submission to the Fed.

  • Review and transmits quarterly data submission to ABA Op Loss Data Consortium and serves as co-chair of the Reporting sub-committee, developing standards for consortium data classification.

  • Maintain departmental desktop procedures governing data entry, change, and validation

  • Works directly with Legal Division to record sensitive op loss events and maintains legal reserve data for use in modeling and regulatory submissions.

  • Reviews and authorizes access to operational loss system of record; perform semi-annual User Access Certification

  • Primary business contact with IT for system enhancements and User Acceptance Testing

  • Supervision duties include accountability for no more than 5 Operational Risk Analysts and responsible for direct daily supervision of staff: including interviewing, hiring, termination of employment, discipline, training, coaching, writing and delivering performance appraisals, compensation changes, delegating assignments, and oversight of work.



  • Typically requires a BA or BS degree plus 8 years in financial services operations management, or 5 years financial services industry experience in an analytical risk position, i.e. audit or risk management.

  • Demonstrated prior management of staff is preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating meetings or professional training techniques.

  • Risk management techniques including process flows and internal controls, risk analysis for trending and identification of changing risk levels, and/or symptoms of process control breakdowns.

  • Must have a solid understanding of the various processes, policies, products, and risks related to the financial industry.

  • Must be able to provide leadership and guidance to senior level managers on operational risk related topics.

  • Familiarity with Basel II operational risk management framework is desired.

  • Industry knowledge of operational risk management techniques and best practices preferred.

  • 10 years banking experience with good knowledge of retail operations

  • Solid understanding of financial accounting concepts and familiarity with general ledgers

  • Strong oral and written communications

  • Good spreadsheet skills

  • Demonstrated experience supervising junior staff
