Job Summary:

Reporting to the Managing Director, Chief Multi-Asset Strategist for HighMark Capital Management, the position has the primary responsibility for spearheading the firm’s third-party investment manager research activities. As a generalist, this role covers all asset classes and alternative investment strategies available through mutual funds, ETFs, separate accounts and private alternative investment funds. The Manager Research Executive will own and execute the process for maintaining the firm’s approved list of best-in-class investment managers. Additional responsibilities include providing timely market commentary, portfolio construction guidance and manager performance updates to portfolio managers and clients.

Major Responsibilities:

Investment Manager Research 60% - Conduct ongoing comprehensive qualitative and quantitative due diligence on active managers in all asset classes and alternative investment strategies. Prepare and present written recommendations for additions to / removals from the firm’s approved list to the Manager Review Group. Oversee adherence to the firm’s manager research process and implement process enhancements as warranted. Provide timely manager performance attribution and positioning updates to portfolio managers and clients. Prepare periodic and ad hoc analysis on manager performance relative to peers and market benchmarks.

Asset Allocation and Portfolio Construction 15% - Contribute capital market insights to the Asset Allocation Committee, primarily focused on alternative asset classes and strategies; including potential portfolio implementation options and macroeconomic perspectives. Assist with model and bespoke portfolio construction.

Topical Research 15% - Develop and present topical investment research for internal and external consumption. Monitor and report on asset management industry trends.

Risk Management - 10% - Responsible for knowledge of and sensitivity to the current regulatory environment. Adheres to the Bank's Risk Vision, and risk management policies and programs; recognizes and proactively addresses risk (including but not limited to those associated with Bank Secrecy Act, anti-money laundering, consumer compliance, fair lending, fiduciary responsibilities and privacy); identifies and appropriately manages risks.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of qualitative and quantitative manager research experience across multiple asset classes and styles, including equity, fixed income and alternatives.

  • Within a collaborative team environment and under tight deadlines, maintain attention to detail, stay organized and deliver insightful opinions.

  • Possess a robust understanding of asset allocation and portfolio construction concepts.

  • Prior experience with Morningstar Direct, Bloomberg, eVestment and Wilshire Compass a plus.

  • Possess strong writing, presentation and project management skills.

  • A master's degree and / or CFA is preferred.
