Data Center Engineer, AVP

Job Summary

This position focuses on the organization and control of day-to-day Data Center operation support and implementation. The operational support is 24 x 365 and includes all Bank production and backup systems. Under the general guidance of the Data Center Manager the position is responsible for facility projects including but not limited to provisioning, inventory control, systems repair, shipping / receiving, and infrastructure management. The position utilizes a host of monitoring hardware and software products to facilitate problem identification and rapid recovery of systems and network entities that may impact Union Bank customers.

Responsibilities

  • Position is required to have a thorough understanding of all the major systems running in the data center, ensuring system integrity and critical facilities infrastructure service availability, able to recommend proper maintenance and deployment procedures and document and enforce operational best practices. Understanding of facilities infrastructure and operations including HVAC, STS, ATS, PDU, UPS, generators, architectural drawings, electrical diagrams, preventative maintenance, familiarity with NAFPA, etc. regulations.

  • Implement processes and procedures for all major data center operations including but not limited to; daily monthly monitoring of critical infrastructure, receipt and disposal of systems and equipment, deployment and changes to systems within the data center, regular inventory including add/move updates to floor plans and regular audits.

  • Responsible for insuring that the data center core services (Power, HVAC, security, etc.) meet all established SLA targets. Assist in problem resolution for any issues or upgrades necessary to maintain the center at acceptable SLA levels. Assist in coordination of timely problem resolution of system errors for any systems running within the center while meeting established SLA’s. Responsible for analysis and troubleshooting of high severity problems and directing corrective action as needed, following established guidelines. Coordinate installation of changes and upgrades to systems and hardware. Ensure the environment is clean, safe and professional at all times.

  • Participate and lead change process to analyze, review, validate, coordinate, and communicate changes within the facility, includes networks, systems and/or applications that may affect the integrity of systems.

  • Senior professional level role, defines procedures for monitoring and analyzes, evaluates, diagnoses and establishes work plan to resolve system issues. This includes troubleshooting for complex hardware, software and network problems. The person must have the ability to multitask and work as part of a larger project team, occasionally as a project leader. Provide mentorship and coaching for junior level team members and communicate both verbally and written with upper management.

Qualifications

  • The position requires a high level of expertise and understanding in multiple facilities infrastructure and IT critical system environments.

  • Typically has 7 to 10 years of IT work experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical or Mechanical engineering or other related field. Or equivalent work experience.

  • UPS – Uninterruptible Power Supply

  • CRAC/CRAH – Computer Room Air Conditioner/Handler

  • PDU – Power Distribution Unit

  • RPP/Sidecar – Remote Power Panel – breaker panel attached to PDU for power distribution to outlets on the DC floor

  • Raised Floor systems

  • Power receptacle/plug types, L6-30, L15-30, C13, C14, C19, C20

  • Power, HVAC, security, etc. and the standards to which they should be maintained

  • UPSs, PDUs, RPPs, Chillers, CRAC/CRAHs, cold/chilled water vs. DX

  • NEC, NFPA, SOX, SSAE16, ASHRAE, ITIL, COBIT, OSHA, Uptime Institute, ANSI/TIA

  • Advanced understanding of data cabling and cabinet infrastructure (copper, fiber, 2-post, 4-post, cabinet, ladder rack, cable tray, etc.), and associated design

  • Copper - Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, RJ11, RJ45

  • Fiber – Single Mode (SM), Multi-Mode (MM), 50 micron, 62.5 micron, laser optimized, SC, LC

  • Understanding of accurate operational guidelines

  • ITIL, COBIT, Change Management, Release Management, Method of Procedure (MOP)

  • Device rack & stack, memory upgrade, HDD swap, data cable connection, new power whip, new support infrastructure (copper/fiber trunks, cabinet/rack installs, power receptacles, etc.)
