Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, responsible for leading the assessment of the Bank's (UB) current data architecture and create and/or validate a data architecture roadmap for the future. Participates in the design and implementation of the architecture roadmap in coordination with appropriate business stakeholders, administrative functions, and technical departments.

Major Responsibilities:

General Job scope: Performs work that is highly complex and varied in nature. Develops integrated solutions to resolve highly complex technical and business objectives. Recognized expert internally and externally for data design and delivery. Provides strategic direction, guidance and integration of products and services. May lead projects and provide guidance/training to more junior staff in developing project data architectures.

  • 20% Strategic Vision Define, create and implement the strategic data architecture roadmap for the enterprise that includes short-term, mid-term, and long-term plans and objectives. The roadmap should include an enterprise logical data model and physical database designs to meet business requirements and objectives.

  • 60% Core Responsibilities Responsible for defining the flow of data within the core Bank systems. This includes identifying and defining the source systems of records, intermediate staging and consuming applications, and downstream reporting and analytical systems (e.g. data warehouse and marts). Develop the enterprise canonical data model that includes relationships between key subject areas and data elements transparent to application specific details and definitions. Work collaboratively with technical resources to create a logical database designs and the resulting physical data models that support project specific requirements. Responsible for participating in the delivery of numerous key business objectives, including ease of information access, regulatory and enterprise reporting and capital reserve calculations, and the integration of data to other technologies and systems. May assist in production support to ensure system performance and stability. Assist in overall data integrity responsibilities ensuring that information that is integrated physically or virtually is at the highest level of data integrity throughout the systems of integration. The Enterprise Data Architect will partner closely with the Bank's data strategy and policy function, the Data Management Office (DMO), which is an Enterprise function that sets the standards for the use of data at the Bank and reports up through the Enterprise Risk Reporting & Analysis department. Other categories of responsibilities as follows: Business Alignment with the DMO: Work directly and closely with the DMO to facilitate the definition and enforcement of DMO policies and operational practices. Working Relationships: Partner with the DMO to review data architecture consistency. Works with business and system analysts, business and technical data users, data warehouse and system design/developers, ETL developers, the centralized technology department management team, and other data stakeholders to execute project tasks and responsibilities. Business Requirements: Partner with the DMO to review data architecture consistency of work completed by lines of business and administrative areas. Assist these departments and areas in reviewing and interpreting business and technical requirements in order to understand business data and information objectives for achieving the defined scope and deliverables. Project and Major Initiative Support: Support enterprise end to end data management processes for projects and major initiatives including troubleshooting of data testing and production support issues, logical and physical data model design, user and systems data access, SQL development, and data performance/speed/load management. Data Modeling: Must be familiar with all levels of data modeling – conceptual, logical, and physical. Strong experience developing 3NF, transactional and dimensional data models and star schemas. Using best practices for logical design, apply creativity and innovation in developing logical data models that define key data elements and relationships between major Bank subject areas. Define logical data structures that are independent of system specific implementations. Translate logical data models into physical data models that include primary keys, physical indexes, and the appropriate level of de-normalization to support the database design for transactional systems, operational data stores, historical repositories, like a data warehouse, and dimensional data marts. Best Practices in Database Design and Delivery: Design and implementation experience of transactional, reporting, and analytical database systems. Familiarity with development architectures that involve Inmon, Kimball, and agile designs. Working knowledge of architecture frameworks that include The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) and/or the Zachman framework. Best practices in data quality methodologies and remediation strategies. Systems Development Life Cycle: Maintain and enforce best practices to facilitate optimized software development, ETL transfer of information, data modeling and database design using traditional project lifecycle development and agile methodologies Deep Systems Knowledge: The ability to quickly assess and understand existing source systems, data transfer methodologies and technology in order to assess the impact of data through key downstream systems such as the data warehouse and data marts. Data Integration: Develop and recommend integration architectures that minimize data redundancy and maximize “use in place” data. Expert knowledge of integration tools and methodologies using standard ETL for batch oriented integration and real-time integration through tools such as MQ Series, IBM's Federation Server, JBoss integrator, etc. Data Governance:: Assist in the evaluation and selection of tools and processes which support rules and principles for data management across the enterprise. Data Architecture Support: Develop new data architectures and update existing data architectures to ensure stability and accuracy of database implementations. Meta Data Management: Familiarity with metadata management practices and tools. Work with the DMO on defining and documenting key data elements. Data Quality: Working experience and deep knowledge of data quality best practices. Master Data Management (MDM): Develop strategies for data acquisition and collection, archiving and recovery, implementation and data grouping and categorization as a basis for implementing master data management as part of the data architecture roadmap.

  • 20% Management of staff: Responsible for directly supervising staff, including interviewing, hiring staff and the termination of staff; recommending salary changes, job promotions; setting work hours, conducting counseling /performance reviews, and planning of the staff ‘s work.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science or other related discipline.

  • Work Experience: 15 years of direct data architecture work experience in a large, centralized information technology environment. Working knowledge of banking and/or financial services industry.

  • Technology Management: 5 years experience developing data architectures and managing database technologies. Worked on data specific implementations for transactional systems, operational data stores, and data warehouse/BI solutions. Practitioner: Must have a strong command of broad and general technical concepts.

  • Leadership Communication: Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must possess an ability to speak and write in plain English about complex technical concepts to ensure a clear understanding by a broad range of business, technical and senior executive stakeholders. Corporate and Team Fit: A team player who collaborates with others and has a positive and collegial attitude.

  • Analysis: Demonstrated problem solving skills with the ability to apply strong critical and logical analysis to business scenarios in the context of technology and data architecture.

  • Time Management and Delivery: Must possess and demonstrate excellent time management skills with the ability to achieve results in a very deadline driven environment with a focus on quality and sensitivity to meeting time commitments.

  • Technical Knowledge Design: Must have the ability to design and develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models to support transactional databases, data warehouses, multi dimensional databases. Design concepts in a service oriented environment to simplify data access and systems integration while optimizing data integrity and data quality.

  • Data Skills: Must have direct experience in data modeling, data Integration, data warehousing and database design, data quality assurance to put into practice key components of the data architecture roadmap. Should be versed in SQL and PL/SQL development with hands-on DBA experience.

  • Extract, Transform & Load (ETL): Must have ETL experience, preferably within an application development environment, as a basis for high quality architecture design and implementation.

  • Configuration Management: Must have experience with enterprise configuration management processes and tools to ensure that technical infrastructure, applications, data relationships, production change control and support processes and their inter dependencies are clear at all times to facilitate planning, minimize operational interruptions, and optimize issue resolution. Working with consulting vendors/service providers during the delivery of technology projects.

  • Vendor Management: Must possess strong experience in managing and working with consulting vendors/service providers during the delivery of technology projects in an onshore and offshore model.
