MUFG Union Bank Lead Tax Specialist in Oakland, California

Description

Duties : Researching and advising on state tax laws including state and local tax reporting and compliance for different states to the MUFG group of companies. Responsible for technical review of state/local corporation income/franchise tax returns for California, New York (state and city) Massachusetts and other unitary returns, state income modification, state/local estimated and extension tax calculations for different states and in-bound US branch code-based (effectively connected income “ECI”) and treaty-based (authorized OECD approach “AOA”) state tax returns by applying state allocation and apportionment sourcing rules. Using online research tools including CCH (Smart Charts), BNA or RIA, PeopleSoft General Ledger (PSGL), VLOOKUP and SUMIF functions in MS Excel and Pivot Tables in worksheets. Reviewing tax payment confirmations, approving state tax payments and preparing journal entries. Calculating affiliates unitary tax adjustment for tax provision and reporting and calculating intercompany settlements for combined state returns in accordance with Regulation W. Reviewing computation of effective tax rates including adjustments for unitary taxes and intercompany settlements for a unitary combined group. Overseeing projects and liaising with vendors and external consultants for state/local tax planning and compliance and with the Tax Planning team for development and calculation of state tax capacity models. Responding to notices issued by state tax authorities related to income and franchise tax issues and supporting tax authority audits. Using Thomson Reuters OneSource Income Tax (OIT) software to prepare federal and state consolidated and combined tax returns; and performing OIT binder management (setup and rollover), chart of account maintenance, diagnostic resolution and e-filing. Drafting of tax procedures and creation of strong control environment, including development of End User Computing (EUC) controls and validations.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting or a related field, or foreign equivalent degree (Employer will accept 3-years of university education and 3-years work experience in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree).

Experience: 3 years of experience with state and local tax reporting and compliance in the financial services, securities, or banking industry preparing unitary tax returns and state income modification; researching and applying state allocation and apportionment sourcing rules; using Thomson Reuters OneSource Income Tax (OIT) software to prepare federal and state consolidated and combined tax returns; OIT binder management (setup and rollover), chart of account maintenance, diagnostic resolution and e-filing; using online research tools including CCH (Smart Charts), BNA or RIA; responding to notices issued by state tax authorities related to income and franchise tax issues ; 2 years of experience must include computing tax rates, tax expense adjustments and intercompany settlements for a unitary combined group; and using PeopleSoft General Ledger (PSGL), VLOOKUP and SUMIF functions in MS Excel and Pivot Tables in worksheets.
