Job Summary:

The Head of Private Wealth Management & Institutional Services is responsible for developing, managing and implementing strategic and tactical initiatives of the Personal Trust, Asset Management, Private Banking and the Broker/Dealer business lines that support the business’ goals, objectives and operating efficiency targets. Reporting into the President of Union Bank and Head of Regional Banking, the Head of Private Wealth Management & Institutional Services will develop and implement strategies to grow the Wealth business including new locations, niches, products and specialized services while ensuring appropriate risk management and pricing oversight. This role will have P&L responsibility and a leadership role in the development and implementation of broader Wealth Markets strategic plans.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Lead Wealth Strategy, Wealth Planning, Investment Management & Trust, HighMark Capital Management (HCM), Private Wealth Advisors and Union Bank Investment Services (UBIS).

  • This role is the public face of the company and works closely with bank business unit managers to ensure alignment between Wealth Management and bank strategies.

Sales/Sales Management

  • Responsible for driving growth in revenue and profits by developing and executing on the wealth management organization's annual, long-term business, and financial results and overseeing the continued development, maintenance and execution of a successful investment process.

  • Setting individual and Business Unit targets to ensure market growth and penetration.

  • Create an effective sales culture in which team quality goals are met.

  • Providing sales management direction through review and analysis of market trend data, pipeline reports, call reports, and win/loss trends.

Strategy/ Financials

  • Manage the strategy of the Wealth group, ensuring a smoothly functioning, efficient organization.

  • Executing on Private Wealth defined strategies and initiatives in the market.

  • Developing and implementing tactical market plans in support of Private Wealth strategy.

  • Providing vision, direction and leadership to Wealth team.

  • Achieving financial goals for revenue/expenses/net income per business plan.

  • Leading execution of wealth strategic initiatives for Mass Affluent and High Net Worth client segments.

People Management

  • Developing an effective team of highly competent market professionals; developing and maintaining a reputation in the marketplace as THE recognized wealth management firm and employer of choice.

  • Coaching and supporting Business Unit leaders and holding them accountable for standards of excellence.

  • Overseeing and ensuring the team is performing effectively and collaborating effectively.

  • Responsible for the overall performance and people management of the organization.

  • Clients / External Marketing

  • Creating strategies for client acquisition, expansion and retention in the markets with a focus on client experience and client outcomes across the enterprise.

  • Providing expertise and leadership in market-related activities to ensure visibility and generate long term business development opportunities.

  • Be visible and known in the market to generate business.

  • Ensuring clients are being directed and serviced in the appropriate wealth segment offering.

Partnerships

  • Ensuring effective communication and positive relationships between senior management and wealth team members to build linkage and strengthen commitment to the Private Bank / Wealth Management strategic vision and goals. Partner closely with other areas of the bank to leverage strengths in other markets and avoid “stovepipe” thinking.

  • Ensure all other relevant partnerships are well managed and Private Bank / Wealth Management is well represented.

  • Responsible for relationships with regulators, professional and client communities, vendor relations, as well as the relationship with MUB, MUFG, and its subsidiaries.

  • Risk Management

  • Directly responsible and accountable for the internal control system, compliance and risk management of Wealth group.

Qualifications

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a unifying leader with a pioneering spirit, who will serve as a single point of accountability in growing Wealth Management and Institutional Services, building on its progress and momentum. As a key member of a newly formed leadership team, he/she will bring significant experience managing sophisticated sales processes, driving profitability and go-to-market processes across the organization while leveraging strong, internal referral opportunities from the consumer, residential mortgage, small business lending, commercial and private banking units.

In terms of the performance and personal competencies required for the position, we would highlight the following:

Education, Licensure, Year of Experience (and type of work experience)

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college (Business major preferred), MBA is preferable.

  • Must have comprehensive knowledge and in-depth experience in private banking, personal trust, broker/dealer, asset management, fiduciary and Bank Secrecy Act risk management, typically acquired through 10 years of progressively complex responsibilities, as well as broad experience in comprehensive Wealth Markets initiatives, solutions, banking and brokerage operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Experience leading an organization to significant growth across multiple wealth related business lines with a proven ability to grow fee income businesses.

  • Ability to work effectively with other members of the Wealth Markets team, executive management, board members, and internal and external regulatory authorities. Must be a highly credible representative of the Wealth Markets group to both external and internal clients.

  • Demonstrated strength in driving operational efficiencies.

  • Extensive financial management expertise and experience.

  • An ability to communicate in an open, candid, clear and consistent manner; listen effectively and probe for new ideas and solutions; be persuasive and self-confident and interact effectively with executive-level members.

  • Sound risk management judgment.

  • Requires ability to provide leadership in managing staff, both directly and through matrix management.

  • Ability to recognize multiple points of view to be considered when accomplishing all of the above duties. Strategic planning and implementation skills and experience.
