Job Summary

In this role you will focus on internal and external compliance requirements, activities, and deliverables to ensure that Operations Process Excellence (a part of Operations & Technology Americas) is well positioned to deliver consistent and compliant customer outcomes, meeting regulatory requirements, and achieving excellence through simple and effective control design. Responsibilities include collaborating with Operations and Process Excellence and from other functions, including second and third lines of defense, and collaborating with Operations & Technology Americas Risk and Control Office (OTA RCO) colleagues with delivering risk and control self-assessments, risk metric reporting, adhering to processes, templates, procedures and stakeholder matrices for activities; creating roadmaps aligned to recurring and ad hoc milestones; ensuring stakeholders execute appropriately and meet milestones on time; tracking, escalating, and/or remediating risks and issues; and developing and executing executive-level reporting.

As part of an effective risk and control framework, Operations and Technology for the Americas (OTA) documents and executes risk and control assessments across processes related to Operations and Technology. There is a comprehensive coverage and joint accountability model that promotes early identification and assessment of operational risk, effective design and evaluation of controls, and sustainable solutions to mitigate operational risks. Control testing is an integral part of the bank’s compliance with policies and standards, identifying whether controls are operating as intended to mitigate associated risk.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Business Unit Risk Manager (BURM) and Business Unit Risk Control Officer (BURCO) and OTA RCO central functions to build and maintain risk and control assessments (RCSA) for all significant processes and follow-up on control deficiency remediation.

  • Accurately and timely report significant and emerging risks from the business unit view. Participate in ad-hoc working groups to address and resolve new areas of risk within their area of responsibility

  • Facilitate support on internal audits and regulator exams, and other control reviews and assist in resolving identified issues and monitor their resolution

  • Perform independent quality assurance to assess adequacy of issue closure design and effectiveness of the remediation.

  • Monitor risk management activities to ensure that they are properly performed and completed for the Operations Process Excellence business units within your area of responsibility. Assist business partners in reviewing risks evolving from various initiatives to ensure that operational risks are recognized, mitigated, reported and/or accepted.

  • Identify and perform root cause analysis on risk trends and/or symptoms of process control breakdowns

  • Keep the BURM and BURCO apprised of changes in inherent risk or control breakdowns/deficiencies that could impact residual risk

  • Review Bank-wide procedures and policies for the Division as well as Division desktop procedures

  • Drive implementation and sustainment of operational risk and control framework

  • Manage the execution of front line controls self-assurance and risk assessment activities (ad hoc controls review, business process management (BPM), risk and control self-assessments (RCSA)) and independent risk and audit activities as needed

  • Consult on controls design and efficiency with operations partners in support of their commitments to align with all applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies and procedures

  • Drive risk culture; influence self-identification and disclosure of control self-assurance gaps

  • Ensure gaps are addressed via remediation plans that adhere to issues management mandates: timely issue and corrective action submission, accurate root cause identification, corrective action monitoring, on time closure, no failed validations, and no repeat issue

  • Monitor and evaluate emerging risk, internal operational trends, and external risk events for potential impact to control environment

  • Prepare risk reporting, risk analysis and risk mitigation recommendations including control environment performance and risk management plans in place for critical issues

  • Support the preparation of meaningful risk and controls governance materials for executive management as needed


  • Undergraduate degree plus 5 years in operations, operational risk management, compliance or related roles

  • 5-6 years experience in operations, operational risk and control, compliance or audit function

  • 5 years of experience in operational risk management, (Includes operations, operational risk management, compliance, fraud, change, data, and third party risk management), or a combination thereof, or other highly regulated environment

  • Understanding of financial institution processes, products, and risk

  • Preferred: knowledge in first line of defense risk and control migitation specifically: thorough understanding of risks and controls, issue management, reporting, metrics, and audits.

  • Preferred: reporting systems (i.e. Tableau)

  • Knowledge of critical domestic and international banking regulations (Reg W, Basel II, Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), etc.) and experience with enforcement agencies oversight activities (regulatory examinations, matters requiring attention (MRAs), consent orders, etc.) within a global systemically important financial institution's information technology and information security environments

  • Experience with executing first line risk assessment/testing methodologies, evaluating the adequacy and efficiency of internal controls; and identifying issues resulting from internal and/or external compliance examinations

  • Experience with process documentation, risk and control assessments, and designing/executing risk reporting

  • Understanding of the regulatory environment and regulations related to operational risks, and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), Federal Reserve Board (FRB), and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) expectations

  • Combined experience in external audit, internal audit, and operatonal risk and/or compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX)

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and influencing skills, and ability to manage stakeholders across multiple disciplines

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills

  • Ability to work effectively in team environment, and influence across all interpersonal levels, where flexibility, collaboration, adaptability, challenge, and influence are important

  • Strong planning and organizing skills; ability to multitask and deal with varied workload

  • Ability to demonstrate an analytical approach to problem solving. Identify, analyze and apply/recommend practical solutions

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities concurrently, prioritize, and efficiently complete responsibilities while maintaining the highest quality

  • Experience with problem solving in a team environment by thinking outside of the box and providing innovative solutions, with and without technology

  • Ability to identify obstacles and work in conjunction with others to identify options/solutions

  • Ability to constructively work both independently and in collaborative environments involving all levels of management and employees

  • Strong work ethic, ability to make decisions, and work under tight deadlines; achievement-oriented and takes initiative

  • Experience with executing Operational Risk methodologies evaluating the adequacy and efficiency of internal controls; and identifying issues resulting from internal and/or external compliance examinations

  • Experience with risk metrics definition and reporting/scorecard development utilizing key risk metrics tools

  • Prior supervisory and/or management role with a focus on talent development

  • Experience in creation and review of work papers to document testing and/or issue closure, and experience in the management of regulatory matters

  • Experience with automating and/or the ability to conceptualize automated control solutions
