Job Summary :
This position is a management role within Internal Audit and is responsible for all aspects of the Financial Management for the America’s portfolio for MUFG’s Combined U.S. Operations. This position owns relationships with senior management across the Financial Management of the America’s functional groups, and will have C-level executive, Board-level and Regulator interactions from time to time. This position is responsible for designing and executing the audit coverage strategy for the portfolio which includes management and regulatory reporting; Sarbanes-Oxley; budgeting, forecasting and strategic planning; corporate and business-unit finance; controllers and tax services, and corporate development activities, in conjunction with the Corporate Function’s Leadership Team, to ensure compliance with regulatory expectations and internal methodology. Also, responsible for independent validation of business remediation activities in relation to regulatory, audit and management self-identified issues.
This position manages a dedicated team of internal staff as well as well as responsibilities for identifying and onboarding any external co-sourcing needs. This position will have full responsibility for escalated decision-making, ranging from staffing and review of deliverables prepared by staff, to enforcement of application of methodologies. This includes accountable for the quality of and judgment calls in resulting work prepared by the team. Provides thoughtful leadership and mentoring to enhance the department’s risk identification, assessment, audit approach and practices, including supporting the development and advancement toward career goals for direct reports. Creates, translates and executes practical and achievable strategies tied to vision and departmental goals/objectives and helps others understand strategy and vision.
Management or Supervision :
This position manages a team of Directors and below (2-6 direct reports). Some travel may be required for the position with an estimated range of 20% or less, varying on the location of the incumbent and key staff and stakeholder geographies.
Major Responsibilities :
Coordinate with regulatory bodies during relevant examinations and oversee all regulatory deliverables through effective communication, ensuring the timely provision of materials to regulatory agencies and engaging with regulators to enhance the organization’s reputation.
Effectively manage senior executive relationships (internally and externally) to mutually accountable, productive, respectful, and trusted level. (e.g., ongoing stakeholder feedback and internal surveys).
Maintain compliance with audit and compliance policies, while also operating within industry best practices, applicable regulations, and internal and external professional practice expectations. (e.g., General Auditor and peer review results and external examination results).
Act as a leader and role model to develop and promote a work place culture that values diversity of thought, promotes integrity and creates an atmosphere that supports coaching and fosters accountability; engage as a team player across peer group and in influencing the Executive Leadership Team; manage a team of managers and auditors and develop staff across the department; and continuously improve self and department. Leads, maintains, identifies and implements innovative methods and tools to bring efficiencies and quality to the Corporate Functions Internal Audit team internal audit process including requisite Centers of Excellence.
Continuously monitor the business for changes that may affect the risk environment and would therefore, require revisions to the internal audit plan.
Maintains expertise of auditable entity portfolio and enterprise including business risks, control frameworks, management strategy, banking/regulatory practices, understands basic products, systems and process and develop expert knowledge of business industry and trends.
Effectively partner with your team and other internal audit groups to provide subject matter expertise in the joint execution of internal audits.
Lead business initiatives pro-actively. Advise and assist the business on change initiatives; and become a trusted advisor to stakeholders and related risk management functions.
Deliver insightful, timely and complete internal audit reports, drawing upon prior industry, regulatory, finance and/or risk management audit experience at the Combined U.S. Operations level.
Oversee the validation and closure of internal and external (e.g. regulatory) risk management and/or finance issues
Through independent assessment of the control environment, structure and lead audits of the finance team to ensure a sustainable framework exists by including awareness of risks both within span of control as well as enterprise-wide, identifying potential concerns and control issues, determine the root cause of issues, on-going monitoring; keeping abreast of significant control issues, trends, developments and hot topics for inclusion within the annual Corporate Functions audit plan with ensuring stakeholders develop and implement appropriate corrective actions:
Reviews test plans developed by staff, coordinate the performance of management testing of internal controls required and prepare and update a comprehensive risk-based audit plan for evaluating the effectiveness of controls required.
Assigns and reviews the work of audit team members for assigned audit engagements. Assess the state of the governance, risk management, and control environment aspects relevant to that risk.
Maintains compliance with audit methodology, while also operating within industry best practices, applicable regulations, and internal and external professional practice expectations.
Challenges audit staff in their scoping, risks, observations, and documentation to ensure accuracy.
Evaluates and communicates potential weakness in company financial and accounting policies, systems, tools, processes, and controls uncovered during audits.
Articulates the relevance of root causes across audit engagements and conducts trend analysis to determine the impact across the organization.
Reports results in an effective and timely basis, leading to appropriate remedial action and ongoing management of risk.
Education, Licensure, Year of Experience (and type of work experience) :
A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related business discipline at an accredited college or university.
Professional auditing certifications, such as the CIA, CPA, or CFSA, are highly desirable.
Advanced degree preferred.
Skills and Experience :
Minimum of 15 years and/or equivalent of experience of internal audit and/or equivalent of experience with the financial services industry, related markets, and related regulatory agencies.
Experience working with the financial industry regulators, including OCC, FRB, and FINRA and responding to regulatory requests.
Extensive experience covering finance, SOX and corporate development activities within the financial services industry
In-depth knowledge of Internal or external audit or risk management experience, including significant management and leadership responsibility in a role directly involved with driving change and program enhancement.
Deep knowledge of risk assessment, audit methodology, and audit execution
Demonstrated proficiency in technology as required for assigned areas (MS Office, audit data analytics, etc.).
Exhibits effective communication (both verbal and written), negotiation and presentation skills; strong interpersonal skills; and ability to engage with all levels of internal audit and business line management.
Employs strong critical thinking skills to identify pragmatic recommendations within an evolving and increasingly complex regulatory and risk management environment.
Experience interacting with the Executive Committee Leadership, control function leadership, and compliance subject matter experts.
Process oriented couple with a strong ability to develop appropriate program enhancing strategies.
Proven managerial skills necessary to successfully administer a core support and critical regulatory relationship function within a diverse organization and effectively coordinate between multiple business and support units.
Possesses strong project management skills; preferably within internal audit functions; exhibits initiative and intuitive thinking; and demonstrates ability to meet strict deadlines.
Relevant experience in successfully building out and managing a team.
Ability to travel is required.
